This book is the result of five years of editing by Judith Kleinfeld, with Barbara Morse and Siobhan Wescott, and focuses on adolescents and adults with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Effects. As in the first book, Fantastic Antone Succeeds, each of the 21 chapters is written by a different author, including:
  • Jan Lutke, adoptive mother of eight individuals with FAS/E, who encourages her children to develop a strong sense of self worth.
  • Cindy Gere, an accomplished artist who overcame her struggles with FAE to get a college degree.
  • Marceil Ten Eyck, a mother who taught her daughter "The Plan" which was applied successfully during school years, employment, and life as a married woman.
  • Susan Doctor, a perinatal substance abuse specialist who describes how to create an "External Brain" as an essential part of case management.
  • Ann Michael, a mother who reveals the necessity of continued support and supervision for her son to avoid serious trouble with the law. Because he was doing well, the agencies removed the 24-hour supervision and allowed him to live independently. The result: arrest and incarceration with a long prison sentence. Ann states that her son was a "victim of his own success and of the philosophy of social service agencies to make its clients as independent as possible."
  • Roger Hornby, a psychologist who offers lessons from Native Americans in using community involvement to help individuals.
  • Sidney Guimont, who describes how she deals with the responsibility of living on her own.
  • Sarah Miranda and Karen Levine, who uncover the complexities of sexuality issues with true-life chronicles.
  • Diane Malbin, an FAS specialist and parent who describes how she found the right school for her daughter.
  • Mary Lou Canney, a mom whose son taught her how to be a good mother. She learned to face the truth about her alcoholism, how to bond to her child, and how to become an advocate for him, and she taught him how to help himself.
  • Deb Evensen, our very own FACTS project coordinator, who explains what techniques work best for high school students with FAS/E.

The Foreword is by Antone's mother, Sally Caldwell, who faces hope mixed with worry as her son moves through adolescence toward an uncertain future. "So far, one foot rests securely in the value-directed world of his family, his school, and religious community, but the other taps to the luring rhythm of corruptions that are within his reach."

The Introduction by Judith Kleinfeld describes life with FAS/E as a roller coaster ride. "There are highs and lows, ups and downs. In these chapters, we caught some of these families and their children at a peak. Since these chapters were written, some have hurtled downward; others have gone full cucle, hurtling down and climbing up again." Judith offers these lessons of experience, the "wisdom of practice," from the parents and practitioners who are the pioneers in the uncharted territory of FAS/E.

The Afterword is by Teresa Kellerman, who describes individuals with FAS/E as birds with broken beaks and wobbly wings. "We might not be able to strengthen those wings, but we can strengthen the safety nets, and we can encourage our young to fly tandem, with mentors and coaches, who can accompany them as they discover all that life's expansive horizons have to offer."
